Of course, if you have turntables already, you could just get some time-coded vinyl and go that route. I can't comment on other controllers since I haven't used any of them. You can pick one up used on eBay for about $60 if you watch it regularly for a couple of weeks.

I'm a big fan of the Stanton SCS.3d, which has fantastic support in Mixxx and great precision. Reviews are even sketchy: it seems like your average DJ gets really excited about brand names but doesn't know enough to measure things like this. However, in my experience, it's a real craps shoot. The more expensive controllers should, theoretically, have better precision on the wheels. The result here is that it's going to feel sloppy, especially when compared to vinyl. If you turn less than 10°, the controller doesn't even notice. In this case, your fidelity is about 10°.

Say, for instance, your controller is using a standard optical sensor (like an older mouse with a ball) and there are 36 black/white transitions in a full rotation: not an unreasonable assumption on a cheap controller. Unfortunately, a lot of these cheaper controllers don't have much precision. Now you're in scratch mode, and the turntables should work more like what you want. Press that and a light should turn on (probably inside the button). Looking through the mapping file for this controller and photos on the web, it looks like there is a yellow button right in the middle of the controller labelled "SCRATCH".
